I have to give credit where credit is due: this class was Levi Roland’s idea! Occasionally we work together at Hex on a Saturday and recently we were having a rare chance to chat. I told him I was thinking about classes to teach for WitchCon and HexFest. He looked right at me and said “Girl, Surviving the Astral”, you are the expert!, Look at you, your hair is tussled, eyes are glazed over, your voice is rough, you‘ve done mediumship three times today, found lost objects, predicted numerous futures, talked to a lost pet and consoled many a heart and you are just standing there, sipping on your diet coke, like nobody’s business. We all wonder how you do it? Do what I say, Survive the astral says Levi!” At this point, it is second nature to me; but here is how I teach what I know from experience.

So ok, these are my top five book recommendations for psychic studies and practical advancement for all levels of student or practitioner. If I were teaching a college-level class on psychic self-defense and psychic skill development; this is what would be in my curriculum.

The core lessons are to be found in The Llewellyn Complete Book of Psychic Empowerment; by Carl Llewellyn Weschcke and Joe H. Slate, PH. D. From defining extra Sensory Perception and Astral Projection exercises, to Clairvoyance and Dream interpretation; these chapters are working tools.

I add to this book, four of the very most important psychic studies books I have come to read. How to Read the Aura by Walter Ernest Butler, Book of Spirit Communications by Raymond Buckland, Psychic Self Defense by Dion Fortune, and The Exorcists Handbook by Josephine McCarthy. I briefly cover the material and ideas in these great occult works.

We will go over a few basic daily and weekly exercises that I use for cleanliness and protection including the Qabalistic Cross, The Middle Pillar exercise, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, Calling the Four Arch Angels, and taking herb and salt baths. Then we will discuss the types of realms that we call the astral, and look at beings and creatures that inhabit areas on the astral, like human ghosts in old buildings or an elemental guardian of a sacred place. We will discuss how to use our protections to avoid bad energy exchange. We will discuss the great materials and ideas in these primer books and discuss a course of study. Finally, we will use a Pathworking to invoke your own spirit guides to come forth and work with you to build relationships on the Inner Planes.
