In the Bulgarian folk tradition, as in the folk beliefs and rituals of other Balkan people, are known different kinds of nature spirits. Some of them are close to the ancient nymphs and are called samodivi/samovili in Bulgarian, vili/samovili in Serbian, nereids in Greek, ielele in Romanian. Some are dragonlike spirits—called zmey in Bulgarian, and others are considered as mistresses of fate called narechnitsi, oristnitsi in Bulgarian, moirai in Greek. In this workshop, we will discuss some of the preserved folk rituals connected with them and some of the most interesting folk beliefs surrounding them today.
