Think back to the oldest of cave paintings, carvings in rock faces, scratches in bone. Some symbols are so universal, like the circle, it has appeared in every culture in every time period. Even more elaborate letters, alchemical symbols, planetary magical squares are examples of line drawing corresponding to magical symbolism. I have long been fascinated with the art of Austin Osman Spare and Rosaleen Norton, Eliphas Levi and Alister Crowley. They placed their hand in in service to Spirit. They created art from their psychic minds, as they induced a psychic trance. I am convinced that the earliest drawings and writings of humans were constructed in similar fashion. There is a superhighway of symbolism that comes forth from the subconscious as magical images.
In this class, we will use colored markers and pencils with heavy card stock to draw and write while in a hypnotic state. Elie will safely lead us to a connection with our higher mind, and our own spirit guides. Then we will be directed to draw and create our own personalized magical tableaus and talismans. Before we begin the work, we will be introduced to basic universal symbols of numbers, shapes, colors and primal images, so we have some reference points and ideas in the collective unconscious. We will also explore automatic writing and automatic drawing as art. Each participant will take home their work, to use in their personal magics.
