Full Schedule

The current magical world, in the West, seems to be shrinking away from the Great Goddess. Focus on male deities, love for incarnations of the Devil as various “Man in Black” figures, and a nervous handwringing over appearing “too soft” or “too New Age” have all conspired to create a problematic conversation around worship of the Great Goddess. In trying to move away from the Goddess movement of our past, we have swung the pendulum far...too far. She is frequently relegated to bygone eras of practices deemed “ahistorical” or “weak.”

Nothing is further from the truth. The worship of the Great Goddess as a totality of deities, a supreme force of transformative power, is life-changing. She is an endless font of magic. There is nothing tame, ahistorical, or genteel about the Great Goddess. In this class we will address common misconceptions about the Goddess, and tap into what Her worship and magic are capable of in our lives.

  • Is the concept of the “Great Mother” really found in ancient cultures? Did practitioners see one Mother with many faces?
  • Why did so many seek initiation, and continue to do so, into cults and groups devoted to a Great Goddess?
  • What is the heart of Her worship? Why do we approach Her altar?
  • What does service and magic look like within Her circles?
  • How do we find Her in our current world?

This class is not a purely historical survey of particular mother deities from history. No. This is an exploration of the current of power from the Great Goddess that surges through so many incarnations: the Mysteries of Eleusis and Samothrace, the Cults of Isis, the Virgin Mary, contemporary Witchcraft, Gaia-Theory Environmentalism, and so much more. This is an exploration of the Great and Terrible Mother that inspired so much of our current magical and Witchcraft practices.
