A witch lights fire with a flick of the wrist or leaves their body to explore another realm. A coven of witches conjures up the devil in a New York apartment house and kills their enemies in an instant. A frizzy-haired witch consults her beloved magical book for the exact potion she needs to conserve her youth, then flies across the city. A young girl consults a Sea Witch to request what she desires. Screeching mandrake roots are repotted, crystals are gazed into, a phoenix saves the day, and glistening figures are sent forth to deliver messages and fight evil. We have all seen these iconic TV and movie moments, but as magical people we have the insight that allows us to see past the special effects and realize that many times there is real magic behind fictional portrayals of witches, wizards, and magicians. In this class we will watch and examine iconic magical movie moments and delve into the authentic occult practices which correspond to them. A unicorn-haired wand becomes an athame, a Sea Witch becomes a Cunning-Woman, and we realize that sometimes reality is more magical than fiction.
