Magic and religious ritual are theater. They speak to the senses. They engage the body and the mind. Their goals are not giving basic information, bland recitation, or mindless drudgery. Their ultimate goal is ecstasy. Their goal is union with the Divine, with fire and light, or with darkness and rebirth. We've known this as a species since the first priests, witches, and magicians spoke to their followers and roused the spirits. We've seen it in high services in Cathedrals, in ecstatic Witchcraft Circles, in Black Masses and Egyptian art. Yet so many rituals fall short of our expectations. We stand in a circle, listen to a story, eat our cake, and go home. Unchanged. This is bad ritual. What is the core of good ritual?
