Full Schedule

Plants have been associated with death and dying since the dawn of humanity. Trees and roots act as world-bridges, sacred groves, and liminal vegetation. Explore the roles plants, flowers, and herbs play in beliefs, rites, rituals, and practices surrounding death, dying, the afterlife, and the Underworld. Learn about folklore, mythology, ethnobotany, funerary archaeology, and how botanical life guides souls, marks thresholds, and sustains rituals of transition across cultures and time.

Join Christina Wilke-Burbach, PhD, a Spiritual/Transpersonal Psychologist, High Priestess, Ordained Minister, Psychic, Death Witch, Death Doula, Deathwalker, Psychopomp, Master Gardener, Herbalist, Aromatherapist, and author of the book “Gardens for Ghosts: The Art, Ritual, & Magick of Planting for the Dead” as she guides you on a botanical journey through the Underworld.

This workshop will cover:

  • A cross-cultural exploration of the Underworld, Hel, Netherworld, and Otherworld
  • How to Enter the Underworld using various technologies (plants, entheogens, altered states, journeying)
  • Plants found in the Underworld in various mythologies, their meanings, and uses
  • The Underworld Gardens of Asphodel Meadows, Hekate’s Garden, Persephone’s Garden, Elysian Fields, Summerland, Field of Reeds, and Tir na nOg
  • Underworld Deities and Botanicals Associated with Them
  • How certain plants entered mortuary and chthonic traditions
  • How to use Chthonic Botanicals in spellwork, ritual, funerals, and death rites

Christina will also guide you on a journey to the Underworld!
